Entry for August 26, 2008
"Chiropractic": Definition from American Heritage Dictionary: "NOUN: A system of therapy in which disease is considered the result of abnormal function of the nervous system. The method of treatment usually involves manipulation of the spinal column and other body structures." Plus this additional info from Wikipedia: "...Traditionally, it assumes that a vertebral subluxation or spinal joint dysfunction can interfere with the body's function and its innate ability to heal itself." I am not a Chiropractor. I do not, therefore, "do chiropractic treatments" nor do I do manipulations of the spine--or any other joint for that matter. Far be it for me to get in to the definition of "manipulation" or the role of chiropractic therapy in healthcare...especially in a little blog like this. BUT (and you knew there was going to be one!) I have taken to writing today (I've been busy working and "summerizing") because of the extraordinary number of requests I've been getting specifically asking for chiropractic therapy. And nothing else. Yet when I ask someone what his/her definition of chiropractic is, 9 times out of 10, it's not chiropractic. I realize that some folks were led to my site because of a link on a local search engine that has me listed under "chiropractic-somethingorother"; most likely because they didn't have another therapy or rehab listing category. But usually it's someone wanting to know if I will "do it"because "so 'n so" had it, recommended it or they read about it on an on-line forum. It has dethroned "aquatic/water" therapy as the most asked about request. And that is concerning. There are some great and not so great chiropractors out there; just like there are great and not so great PTs. (If, by the way, you are a great chiropractor, drop me a note.) There are some conditions that are helped by manipulation, chiropractic-type "adjustments", and many that are not. I'm surprised by the number of people that are willing to "try" manipulations without fully understanding what chiropractic truly is OR what the exact diagnosis is they want treated. Mostly I hear, "well, it's cheaper than surgery!" If your doctor recommended surgery, chances are it's a problem that will not be resolved by manipulation and in many, many cases could be made worse. Bottom line: You want to try chiropractic therapy because, if this is for your dog, you want to help them and if something helped your neighbor's dog, it just might work for you! You obviously have the best intentions and you love your furchild to bits and don't want them to be in pain. Drop me a note or call me and ask what my thoughts are about YOUR particular situation because EVERYONE is different and EVERY type of therapy is different. I will honestly tell you whether I think chiropractic treatment might be of benefit or whether you may wish to try something else. In the very least, please do a LOT of research and call around. Get many opinions, not just mine.
